If you love the show and movie as much as I do, but want to know the real story, you HAVE to read this book! Apel doesn't leave any stones unturned it seems. The people and situations are not composites, but real people and real situations, making you feel as though you can smell the mildewed operating tents, the horrors of young men torn to shreds being transported from the battlefield, the brave pilots who flew primitive helicopters into fire fights to rescue the wounded, the fantastic nurses who assisted the doctors, the average corpmen and mechanics who kept things going. Apel wrote in a very easy to understand way, even when he gets technical. This book is one of the most entertaining war memoirs I've ever read. Apel's real life stories were used for the show. I couldn't put it down and zipped through it over new years break. The book written by Richard Hooker, for which the tv show and movie were based on, are just composite characters according to Hooker. I wanted to know the real story of a Mash.
